What is the Great City of the Book of Revelation? — 4 Comments

  1. Thanks, James, well said.

I do not think that John would have thought it necessary to refer to the mostly destroyed city of Jerusalem by the symbolic name, Mystery Babylon. There would be no fear of repercussions to do so. However, if he was referring to Rome, he would have been exceedingly careful; for he already was a prisoner, most probably during the end of Domitian’s reign.

The apostle Paul was likewise careful to refer to Rome, as I believe, in 2 Thessalonians 2:6-7 in a very guarded manner.

In Revelation 16:19, the great city (Babylon or Rome) is divided into three parts after the seventh vial is poured out. If this refers to the loss of Papal Rome’s temporal power in 1870, I am inclined to consider the three parts of the great city to be the corporate city states: Vatican City (the spiritual power; the City of London (financial power); and the city of Washington D.C. (military power).

This unique phenomena of the three independent city states which seek mastery of the whole world is unprecedented. The central bank system stems from London; you mention the numerous military bases of the US scattered around the world; and the tide of ecumenism for a one world religion is led by the Vatican.

It is interesting to note, there is an argument made, that after the Civil War, the United States became bankrupt, and was bailed out by the central banks centered on London. The condition was the formation of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA CORPORATION in Washington DC which took control of the Republic. This happened in 1871, just after the loss of the temporal power of the Papacy. This completed the trio of the three independent city states.

Of course, this is so much speculation at this point.

    • Thank you Ron! Those are very good points you brought out. The book of Revelation is written in such a way that Roman officials, not knowing the Scriptures, wouldn’t be able to see it is talking about them. That’s how I heard it explained once.
