Romanism and the Reformation – H. Grattan Guinness — 4 Comments

  1. Hi James, This is Richard again. I just finished reading much of the articles by Guinness (1833). I greatly appreciated that perspective and surely was generally the perspective from which William Miller, a Baptist layman-preacher (The Advent awakening) preached from. He began his ministry about then and concluded it in 1844, when Jesus obviously did not come. It is known in SDA history as the great disappointment! I have no idea if Guinness’s work had any influence on Wm. Miller. However, the general “application” of the beast’s of Daniel 7 (as is true of all the Reformers of Protestantism as the author notes) was the same as I grew up being taught as an SDA. His application of the Dragon of Revelation 12 to Rome was also similar. And the application of the 1260 day prophecy of Daniel 7 & 12 and Revelation 11,12,13 was very similar. There are many points of agreement for me because of his affirmation of the Reformation as of God’s leading. Anyway, thanks for sharing it. It was helpful in understanding your apocalyptical views.

  2. Hi James again. I just reviewed again the last pages of Guinness’s book. I had a couple of thoughts about his application of the “two witnesses” of Revelation 11. First of all his application of this term to those who witnessed not only to the true gospel but also to or against the works of the anti-Christ was significant. I used to think that the term (two witnesses) applied to the New and Old Testament. However after reading this article I have been reflecting on what my wife and I have been reading in the book of Deuteronomy. The law of God was that no one could be condemned without at least “two witnesses” in a murder trial. Of course the author applies it to all the saints who were killed by the anti-Christ power (numbered in the thousands) and their blood cries out like the blood of Able for vindication (i.e. the judgment scene in Daniel 7). This expanded view of course does not exclude the war against the “Word of God” that the anti-Christ has been engaged in since Eden. Thanks for sharing the pages of this book.

    • Thank you, Richard. That’s a good point about the two witnesses. In the Old Testament they clearly were people. And it’s interesting there are only 3 verses in the Bible containing the words “two witnesses”.

Deuteronomy 17:6  At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall he that is worthy of death be put to death; but at the mouth of one witness he shall not be put to death.
Deuteronomy 19:15  One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.
Revelation 11:3  ¶And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.
