The greatest calamity of the reign of Charles I was the attempt of Archbishop Laud to reverse the Reformation in England and Scotland, and Romanize the Church of England. Laud was a thorough-going Romish idolator, with this difference, that he endeavoured to be Pope himself in England and to teach and practise the doctrines of the Church of Rome in the Church of England as Christianity.
