Pioneered Hitchhiking in Guam!

Maggie and Frank, the Chamoro couple who took us home.

On May 19th, our hostess Miss Paca took Tess and me to Micronesia Mall, 4.4 kilometers from home. I walked the distance back and forth on June 16 under the noonday sun. People in Guam don’t walk such distances. My friends thought I performed a great feat!

Miss Paca told her she would take us to Micronesia Mall but she could not wait for us to take us back home. We were on our own! If I was alone I would have walked back, but because Tess and I were together, and it was a rainy day, I told Tess, “Let’s hitchhike! Come on! I’ve done this thousands of times, and not only in Japan, but when I was a teenager in Chicago going home from High School!”

And so we walked to the closest intersection for traffic to stop. Our way back home to Barrigada Heights was a straight shot. I knew for certain most of the cars would go there.

After 10 minutes of waiting it started to rain. Tess and I walked to a nearby shop under its covering to get out of the rain. A car pulled up and offered us a ride! It was a Chamorro couple, Frank and Maggie, who just returned to Guam from Saipan. They were delighted to help us and we were overjoyed to meet them! And I was especially glad to know it is possible to hitchhike in Guam.

  1. Not sure how I found your post but as you mentioned hitchhiking you caught my attention. Years ago I did a lot of hitchhiking from coast to coast and up and down the eastern seaboard and even across Canada. I haven’t seen a hitchhiker in years, if I did I would pick them up. I never held up a sign, just my thumb. I have heard that the Japanese are the least evangelized nation. Hope you had great success. God bless you, Joseph

    1. Thank you Joseph! My hitchhiking days are over. I left Japan and now need a car for transportation, not just for me but especially for my wife. Public transportation on Guam is no good.
