  1. “Believe it or not, I do better in Japanese.”
Actually, no I don’t believe that at all.
“The difference between a wrong character and the right one is usually pretty clear.”
Oh really? Which are the correct characters for the red spider lily (Lycoris radiata), one of Japan’s favorite flowers:

    曼珠沙華
    or
    饅頭釈迦?
    or
    曼珠釈迦
    or
    饅頭沙華

Just asking, you know, Japan James.

    Reply from James Japan,

Give me a break! I’m not a botanist! I’m talking about the difference between words like this:
    進行
    振興
    信仰
    侵攻
    進攻
    進講
The romaji for each of those words is shinkou, and only one of them means “faith” a word I use frequently. Of course i know the difference. And I know the meanings of the others as well.

    • My wife didn’t even know and she’s Japanese! But looking at the characters I knew it had to be either the first choice or the last because of the 草冠 at the top of each. We looked it up on the Internet and saw it was the first. From your website I see you ARE a botanist! That’s not playing fair, don’t you think?
